DMA/AIM net.marketing Conference
Google representative Matt Cutts followed up on something Tim Mayer had been talking about yesterday: robots.txt files. He said there are other ways to keep the robots out and prevent unintended indexes, including prohibiting robots in your .txt file. You can also set passwords at the .htaccess level to prevent access. The Google robot honors the NOINDEX tag. Another option would be using the URL removal tool.

DMA/AIM net.marketing Conference
As searches become more sophisticated, the search engines are forced to evolve to keep up with the changing times. At yesterday’s session, Tim Mayer from Yahoo! Search explained how Yahoo! has improved its abstracts, the presentation of its results pages, and how it has developed a new algorithm designed specifically to focus on longer query searches using more terms. Yahoo! now offers a larger index, and he mentioned additional changes to page cache although he didn’t state any specifics.

DMA/AIM net.marketing Conference
What I consider to be the most important session so far for the WebProNews and WebProWorld audience was yesterday’s Search Engine Showdown. The session pulled representatives from Yahoo, Teoma, and Google into the same room. No, there wasn’t any mud wrestling! The speakers took some time to talk about what’s currently happening with their respective search engines and then answered audience questions. .

And now, for one final update from the DMA/AIM net.marketing conference. This update is on a subject I'm sure most of you are familiar with: blogs! DMA/AIM net.marketing Conference
Yesterday, I attended the Performance-Based Marketing session at the DMA/AIM net.marketing conference, where I've been reporting live all week. The session started off with basic information about what performance based marketing meant to the speakers' individual companies and, to me, it wasn't any more interesting than a sales pitch with no real solid information.

DMA/AIM net.marketing Conference
My curiosity peaked earlier today when CNET CEO and Chairman Shelby Bonnie discussed GameSpot, CNET's gaming industry portal, which covers over 7,500 products and has over one million users per day. Games are currently announced 1-2 years in advance and the site’s editorial properties track every single interaction a user has with each game, whether through playing the game, reading reviews, downloading trials, or watching movies.

Advertising is Changing. CNET CEO and Chairman Shelby Bonnie believes advertising is fundamentally changing and the mindset of what marketing is needs to change along with it. Bonnie predicted an increase in consumer control, again pointing to Korea and other foreign countries as a source for studying trends.

At the end of the PPC session led by Kevin Lee and Dave Carlson I asked them to speak some towards the differences between a searcher at Yahoo and a searcher at Google.
I've been under the impression that Yahoo has typically served consumers more than business, and that more businesses search on Google. (I'm open to discussion on this, especially if anyone has numbers. I'm going on gut here.)

Proctor and Gamble Teaming up with eBay? Just on the down-low… I overheard the Proctor and Gamble representatives discussing a potential deal between Proctor and Gamble and online bidding giant eBay. Apparently, Proctor & Gamble is looking at an eBay deal that would allow them to use the eBay database and in return eBay would use Proctor & Gamble's marketing capabilities for their sales department. If this deal goes through, it could be pretty big news.
